Parts move in packaging, labeled and traceable
An automotive part rarely moves on its own. It moves in a container or on a pallet, packed to a defined standard, labeled so that the receiving plant can identify and book it automatically, and recorded so that its origin can be traced if a quality issue arises. SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition supports this through handling unit management, standard transport labeling, and batch and serial traceability. This article describes those capabilities and, as with the rest of this category, is explicit about where the public cloud edition's standard scope ends and the fuller on-premise automotive scope begins.

Handling unit management
A handling unit is a physical unit consisting of packaging material and the goods it contains, identified by a unique number. SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition supports handling unit management through its built-in warehouse management: an organization defines packaging materials and packing instructions, packs goods into handling units, and processes those units through picking, packing, staging, and loading during outbound delivery.
For automotive, handling units are the basis for standardized, returnable packaging and for the identification of what is physically shipped. A handling unit groups the parts into the container the customer expects, carries its own identification, and links the packed goods to the outbound delivery. When the packing information travels to the customer in the shipping notification, the receiving plant can post its goods receipt against the handling units rather than re-counting loose parts, which is the efficient receiving model automotive customers rely on.
Packaging standards and the global transport label
Automotive parts are labeled to industry-standard layouts so that any plant in the supply chain can read and process them. SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition provides a standard handling-unit shipping label whose form template is based on the VDA 4994 recommendation, the global transport label used in the automotive industry. This label is produced through handling-unit output, so packing a handling unit and issuing its label are part of the same standard process, and SAP's documentation acknowledges the relevance of the Odette, AIAG, and VDA norms that govern automotive labeling and data exchange.
There is an important boundary to state clearly. The public cloud edition ships a standard label based on the VDA 4994 global transport label; it does not provide the full automotive label portfolio associated with the on-premise automotive solution, such as the wider range of VDA and Odette label variants, small-load-carrier labels, and master and mixed labels tied to just-in-sequence processing. A project should confirm that its customers' labeling requirements are met by the standard global transport label, and treat any requirement for the broader automotive label set as a gap to be assessed, potentially pointing to a partner solution or, for entities that need the full set, the on-premise or Private Edition scope in a two-tier design.
Batch management and traceability
Traceability is the ability to establish, for a given quantity of product, which materials, batches, and processes went into it, and to which customers it was shipped. SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition provides this primarily through batch management. A batch is a quantity of a material managed as a distinct, uniquely identified unit with its own characteristics, and batch management records the movement of batches across procurement, production, inventory, and sales.
With batch management active, an automotive supplier can trace forward from a received or produced batch to the deliveries and customers that received it, and backward from a shipment to the production lot and the component batches consumed. This bidirectional genealogy, built from the links between goods movements, production, and deliveries, is what makes a targeted response to a quality problem possible: identifying exactly which shipments and which customers are affected by a specific batch, rather than acting on the whole population.
Batch determination and batch-specific characteristics also support quality-driven allocation, for example directing particular batches to particular customers or uses. For automotive suppliers, the practical value is the ability to answer, quickly and precisely, which parts came from which materials and went to which customers.
Serial number management
Where individual items must be tracked rather than quantities within a batch, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition supports serial number management. A serial number identifies a single item and can be tracked through goods movements from goods receipt to goods issue, giving item-level visibility for parts where each unit's identity matters.
Serial numbers complement batches: batches support lot-level genealogy across high-volume parts, while serial numbers support item-level tracking for parts that warrant individual identification. Both feed the same traceability objective. Where quality inspection must be recorded against serialized items or against handling units, that is supported, though a project should verify the specific applications and any release-dependent limitations for serialized inspection against current SAP documentation.
Recall-relevant trace-back
Automotive suppliers must be able to support a recall or a contained field action, which depends on precise trace-back. It is worth being clear about what the public cloud edition provides here: traceability for recall purposes is achieved through the batch and serial genealogy described above, not through a dedicated automotive recall module or a specific industry certification built into the product.
In practice, the trace-back chain runs from a customer complaint or field issue to the shipments involved, from those shipments to the handling units and deliveries, and from the deliveries to the production lots and the component batches consumed. Because SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition records these links in a single, unified data model, the chain can be followed within the system. The organization's recall process, the decisions, notifications, and containment, sits around this data; the system provides the genealogy that makes the process accurate and fast, which is the appropriate role for the ERP in a recall.
Design considerations
For automotive parts, an implementation on SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition should confirm:
- Packaging design. How parts are packed into handling units, which packaging materials and packing instructions apply, and how returnable packaging is handled.
- Labeling requirements. Whether the standard VDA-4994-based global transport label meets customer requirements, and how any requirement beyond it, from the broader automotive label portfolio, will be addressed.
- Traceability model. Where batch management applies and where serial number management is needed, and how the two combine to give the required genealogy.
- Recall readiness. How the batch and serial trace-back supports the organization's recall and field-action processes, recognizing that the system provides genealogy rather than a dedicated recall module.
- Quality integration. How inspection results, including any serialized or handling-unit-based inspection, connect to the traceability records, with reference to the quality-management article.
- Scope confirmation. Verification of the relevant scope items and any release-dependent details against current SAP documentation for the target release.
Handled this way, an automotive supplier can pack, label, and trace parts within standard SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition scope, with a clear view of where the standard global transport label and batch-and-serial genealogy meet requirements and where a specific automotive labeling need falls outside standard public cloud scope.
